Xarelto

Xarelto is a blood-thinning drug that was approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011. It was prescribed to: minimize the risk stroke, minimize the risk of blood clots, and treat pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.

Xarelto is a dangerous drug because it causes bleeding in patients that is difficult to stop. Blood-thinning drugs before Xarelto, like Coumadin, often had a reversal agent, which allows doctors to reverse the thinning effect the drug has on the blood if bleeding occurs. This is life-saving because if a patient is in surgery or otherwise experiences a severe bleeding event, the ability to “thicken” the otherwise-thinned blood can save the patient’s life. Xarelto does not have a reversal agent, making it extremely dangerous.

Another reason Xarelto is a dangerous drug is the advertised lack of doctor blood monitoring. Serious blood-thinning drugs like Xarelto often require the patient to visit their doctor regularly (e.g. once per month) to have their blood tested. If the blood is too thin, the doctor can lower the dosage; if the blood is not thin enough, the doctor can increase the dosage. By discouraging and advertising against blood monitoring, Xarelto only increases the chances that a patient will experience a several bleeding event.

Xarelto also advertises that patients need only take the pill once per day. For some patients, this leads to “highs and lows” in dosage: highs when the pill is first ingested, and lows 18 to 24 hours after the pill is ingested. This once-per-day regimen is good for marketing purposes—it makes the drug more convenient and more likely to sell—but it is more dangerous for the patients who take it.

Testosterone

Testosterone has been prescribed and sold to men who have low testosterone levels.     • Why should I hire an attorney?

      The main thing we try to impress upon people is that it’s never too early to talk to an attorney, and it’s always too late. By that we mean that speaking with an attorney very soon after a crash or other accident in no way will harm you. Along the same lines, the longer you try to handle a claim on your own or delay hiring competent counsel, irreparable damage can be done in the form of recorded statements given to the insurance companies and evidence not being preserved.     • How and when do I pay for a personal injury attorney?

    • What is my claim worth?

      Personal injury claims are usually resolved by either settlement or by a jury. When a case is settled, it is the client’s decision of whether or not to accept a settlement offer. The lawyer will advise the client as to the potential value of the claim. Lawyers evaluate the potential value of a claim by predicting what a jury would do based on experience with similar claims.A jury can consider all sorts of damages in a personal injury case including medical expenses in the past and in the future, loss of earnings in the past and in the future as a result of the injury, physical pain and mental anguish in the past and in the future, compensation for impairment – that is loss of use, and disfigurement damages.     • How long will my claim take to resolve?
